Resilient Play, 2024
Milwaukee, WI
In collaboration with LUNA MKE
The Resilient Play mural at 27th and Highland is a vibrant public art project organized by LUNA MKE, in collaboration with the Milwaukee Department of Public Works, Near West Side Partners, and Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers. Funded by a Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Initiative grant, the mural is designed to beautify the area while enhancing street safety.
Artist Phoenix S. Brown led the creation of Resilient Play, drawing on input from students at Milwaukee High School of the Arts. This collaborative design process ensured that the mural resonates with the local community, reflecting its unique spirit and creativity.
The painting of the mural was a collective effort, bringing together Near West Side Partners staff, a skilled team of artists, and dedicated community volunteers. One local resident, inspired by the project, joined in spontaneously, exemplifying how public art can foster community engagement and unity.
Resilient Play not only adds a dynamic visual element to the neighborhood but also contributes to broader city efforts to improve public safety. By transforming the slip lane at 27th and Highland, the mural creates a safer, more welcoming environment for pedestrians.
This project, spearheaded by LUNA MKE, highlights the powerful role of public art in revitalizing urban spaces. Resilient Play stands as a testament to the impact of community collaboration, showcasing how art can enhance both the beauty and safety of our streets.
